ODOP INFORMATION

Visakhapatnam is a coastal, port city, often called “The Jewel of the East Coast”, situated in the of Andhra Pradesh, located on the eastern shore of India, nestled among the hills of the Eastern Ghats and facing the Bay of Bengal to the east. It is primarily an industrial city, apart from being a port city. It is also home to the Eastern Naval Command. It isa primarily maritime district and a large population of fishers from the adjacent district seek their livelihood depending upon the SEA FOOD.  

The fisheries sector aims at exploitation of all the possible water resources under capture and culture fisheries for increasing fish production and productivity through sustainable development. The sector is contributing considerably for, food security, nutrition and health, lively hood security to rural population besides export earnings   and welfare of fishers. Recognizing the importance of fisheries sector, it has been identified as growth engine for economic development based on an evaluation of potentials of sectors to build on accumulated strength, to make significant impact on Gross State Domestic Product, and to exploit opportunities created by global trends

Identifies as a Sea food cluster

Visakhapatnam is blessed with the 67 KM of coastline with huge potential of marine resources with one major fishing harbor and 15 fish landing centerswith 676mechanized boats and 1306 motor boats and 441 non motor boats. Apartfrom these 14 processing plants,17 ice plants,25 cold storages, 15 shrimp hatcheries, 21 mini fish retail units,one lounge, 3 daily units are running with the brand name of FISH ANDHRA processes the Fish and fishery products with SOPs and export them internationally, nationally and market domestically.Its natural harbour facilitates the efficient handling and export of seafood products.The major fish items landed at the harbour are shrimps, cuttlefish, carangids, ribbon fish, seer fish, Tuna and major fish landings are exported to markets in Kerala, Orissa, Chennai, Karnataka and northern states of India

Fish production of 51.06LMTwas achieved during 2023-24 in Andhra Pradesh. The huge growth in production and promotion of L.vannamei and black tiger shrimp in Andhra Pradesh State, helped a lot in seafood exports. A rise in export of farmed and captured shrimp has made Visakhapatnam the top seafood exporting port in the country. Exports from Visakhapatnam are to the US region followed by China, SE Asia and then the other European / Mediterranean countries.

The major products like frozen seafood, chilled Fishery products, processing and packing of chilled Pasteurized Crab meat, cooked and breaded fish & fishery products continued to be the major item of export. Among the shrimps, Vannamei shrimp is the topmost variety which is getting exported both in quantity and value from Vizag. A large number of Exporters of marine products are located especially in and around the Visakhapatnam port and exporters from neighbouring Odisha also favoured the Vizag port.

The fisheries sector has also been one of the major contributors of foreign exchange earnings. During 2021-22, export of marine products reached 1369264 tonnes valued at Rs.57586.48crores (over US$7759.58million). Visakhapatnam port recorded the maximum exports among the ports with 247755 tonnes, contributing 27.39% US$ of the total exports. The value of fish exports from Visakhapatnam has seen a continuous growth.

For enhancing the exports of Sea fish catch from Visakhapatnam the existing natural fishing harbour is being Upgraded by 152 crores having all the facilities like Cold storage, packing unit, modern auction halls with all machinery that were approved by Export Inspection agency

The huge potential and high quality Infrastructure in case both Physical and in terms of human resources makes the District identified as SEA FOOD CLUSTER

Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY):

    • Under CSS- Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) for beneficiary activities, the pattern of assistance the total Government subsidy for SC beneficiary is 60% (36% – GoI + 24% GoAP) on the unit cost. The remaining 40% is to be borne by SC Beneficiary. The total Government subsidy for General category is 40%. The remaining 60% is to be borne by beneficiary.

ODOP – SEAFOOD CLUSTER:

Visakhapatnam holds a population of around 51536 marine fishermen of which 10004 are active (sea going fishermen). The Department of Fisheries is promoting the domestic consumption of fish and fishery products by establishing mini fish retail outlets by the interested beneficiaries under Fish Andhra brand. Cold chain management was given importance in this scheme. The department also focus on the processing and value addition of sea food which utilizes the marine bycatch thus reducing the fish wastage.

With brand name FISH ANDHRA the fish and fishery products have been supplied to the consumers in fresh and quality meeting the standards of FSSAI and enhanced the domestic consumption. The store contains all the products belonging to fish and fishery related products fresh, frozen, pickles, breaded shrimp ready to eat products and other value added products

Fish:

wide range of fish varieties such as tunas, mackerals, sardines, cods are rich inomega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, calcium, and vitamin B12.

Shellfish:

It includes the crustaceans like shrimp, lobster, crabs, molluscs like oysters, mussels, clams and others like squids, cuttlefishes and octopus.Low in calories and high in protein. Shrimp contains antioxidants like astaxanthin, which can reduce inflammation and promote brain and heart health.

SEAWEED:

Seaweed, also known as marine algae, is a diverse group of plant-like organisms found in marine environments. It plays a crucial role in ocean ecosystems and has various applications for humans. High in vitamins A, C, E, and various B vitamins.Rich in iodine, calcium, magnesium, and iron.Contains dietary fiber which aids in digestion.

ODOP (ONE DISTRICT ONE PRODUCT)-VISAKHAPATNAM DISTRICT -SEAFOOD CLUSTER

Andhra Pradesh state is blessed with potential and diversified water resources with 974 kms of coastline. AP stands first in total fish production in the country with 30% share. As of recent estimates, the fisheries sector contributes around 9.15 % to the state’s GSDP, reflecting its importance in the state’s economic structure.The fisheries sector in India contributes around 1% to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and over 5% to the agricultural GDP. The state contributes 35% of (Rs 20,020.00 crores) seafood exports of the country. Andhra Pradesh Government has identified the fisheries sector as one of the major growth engine.

Visakhapatnam district is one of the leading districts in the state of Andhra Pradesh in seafood export. It is one of the 12 coastal districts in the state, with the administrative headquarters located at Visakhapatnam. Visakhapatnam District is blessed with 67 km coastline, with 14 processing plants,17 ice plants,25 cold storages, 15 shrimp hatcheries and with natural Harbour and largest port, 15 fish landing centres, one Dry fish Yard at Thimmapuram (Bheemilimandal)

And last but not least Andhra university the Pioneer university which made number of researchers, entrepreneurs academicians, who contributed their services and made Visakhapatnam as a major sea Food cluster by introducing Fishery related courses in Graduation, Post Graduation , and doctorate etc. The Departments Zoology, Marine living resources and Oceanography contributed significantly in this.

For enhancing the exports of Sea fish catch from Visakhapatnam the existing natural fishing harbour is being Upgraded by 152 crores having all the facilities like Cold storage, Packing unit, modern auction halls with all machinery that were approved by Export Inspection agency.

At present 2547 fishing vessels are operating at Visakhapatnam Fishing harbour and providing employment to about 12,000 families directly and indirectly. The average annual landings are about 70,000 to 80,000 MTs and significantly contributing to the sea food exports. The major fish items landed at the harbour are shrimps, cuttlefish, carangids, ribbon fish, seer fish, tuna and major fish landings are exported to markets in Kerala, Orissa, Chennai, Karnataka and northern states of Indi
